Quirky Inflection
14 May - 13 June, 2026
Michael CORRA’s work is predicated upon extended periods of time and meticulous attunement. On canvas, he sustains a long process of layering and covering colours while adjusting forms. The screen begins with or concludes at the shapes of vases, flowers, or anonymous decorative patterns. However, what is significant here is not the representation of the object. Rather, it is the visual ambiguity arising from the point where beginning and end are difficult to distinguish clearly, and the resulting state of illusion, that constitutes the site occupied by CORRA’s work.

The illusion encountered before his works is far removed from visual play that deceives the eye. It is closer to a phenomenon of the cognitive dimension, where the perceptual system senses spatiality and temporality beyond the limits of the flat plane. The strata of condensed colour and the trajectories of brushstrokes within the screen are not static images, but function as a space-time that inherently contains a flickering, mysterious power. Before such surfaces, the spectator experiences a vivid transition of sensation that exceeds the mere reception of visual information.

Furthermore, this cognitive illusion operates as a ‘crevice’ through which we can project ourselves into the screen. A unique attribute of fine painting lies in its ability to make the viewer insert their own body and consciousness into the plane, regardless of the physical dimensions of the screen. It could be described as a process of suction. In any case, CORRA’s small canvases thus become strange sites within our perception where a flat space and an eternal-like moment are realised. Within this sense of infinite space opened by the plane, the spectator accepts the world beyond the finite frame with their entire body.

Ultimately, CORRA’s painting exists not as an object to be observed, but as a state to be experienced. This experiential dimension of appreciation—of entering into the work—positions spectators not as passive observers but as explorers of an infinite space-time. The inflection of unexpected emotion discovered within the confined dimensions of the canvas feels like a powerful testament to how painting establishes itself and exists within our perception.
