Imprint
8 July - 1 August, 2026
The forms presented in Imprint appear divested of their familiar functions and meanings. A horn that no longer carries sound, a face turned inside out, and pieces of timber cut through and pierced seem less like objects that have lost their centre than presences that cannot be reduced to a single essence in the first place. They do not explain themselves. Instead, they quietly disclose only what they have touched, the forces that have passed across them, and what has left its mark.

What matters here is not form itself but the sense of time accumulated on the surface. Timber is cut, copper is folded, and resin flows before hardening. Graphite sheets wrap around disparate materials to form another skin, while the scratches and impressions produced in the process are not flaws to be concealed but the means by which each work reveals its own history. Hyo Duck HWANG attends to these lingering traces, marks and stains. Rather than looking towards some hidden interior, it is on the surface—where things are most readily worn, altered and layered over—that he reads the passage of time, imagines what has taken place, and encounters existence through the faint marks left upon that shallow place.

We often assume that truth lies somewhere beneath the surface. We look beyond appearances in search of an object's essential core. HWANG’s works, however, reverse that direction of looking. Perhaps existence does not reside in something concealed deep within, but becomes perceptible through countless acts of touching, pressing and leaving traces behind. If this is the case, the surface is not a veil that conceals essence, but the only place where existence reveals itself. It is not the most fragile layer of an object. Rather, it is where the history of its encounters with the world has been inscribed. Therefore, we find ourselves lingering before that thin place, where different worlds meet and where the imprint of their contact remains.
